An elegant and floral coffee hailing from Ethiopia’s highlands

THE COFFEE

Our Gedeb coffeeis named after a region nestled in the heart of Ethiopia’s renowned coffee-growing highlands. It’s home to some of the country’s most prized Arabica coffees thanks to its fertile red-brown clay soils, dense semi-forest cover, and high altitude.

Gedeb is part of the Gedeo Zone, which is often synonymous with nearby Yirgacheffe. There, coffees tend to be more delicate and floral, almost veering into being tea-adjacent, different from the fruitier or fuller-bodied coffees found elsewhere in the country. Yirgacheffe was also the spot of the first wet processing mill in Ethiopia.

These Gedeb beans were first harvested as fully ripe red cherries, selectively handpicked in the winter. They are washed and fermented for 48 hours for cleanness, elegance, and clarity. Expect juicy nectarine, soft marshmallowy sweetness, and expressed orange peel on the finish.

THE PEOPLE

Gedeb is brought to us by Mulugeta Tsige, who grew up in a village in the Gedeo Zone. For him, coffee is a family tradition, and he came of age working on a coffee farm while getting his education. With a degree in financial management, he worked with Ethiopian coffee cooperatives and witnessed firsthand how hard coffee farmers worked…but how wages often didn’t reflect that.

In 2021, he secured his own exporting license and started the Mulugeta Tsige Washing Station. As an exporter, he is diligent about sharing the highest-quality beans with a global audience, paying a dividend to outgrowers to ensure that only ripe cherries are delivered and paying defect pickers at the washing station to guarantee a flawless final product.

This commitment secured Mulugeta a Cup of Excellence while ensuring delicious coffee is sold at a fair price for the farmers.

THE IMPACT

In Gedeb, thousands of families farm coffee, often on small plots of lands and for generations, and they rely on it for their livelihood. However, as is common in many coffee farming areas, the demand for beans didn’t always translate to fair prices. By ensuring that farmers are properly rewarded for their work, Mulugeta contributes to larger changes across the region. Ethiopia’s high-quality beanscontinue to win global recognition, and farmers receive more sustainable earnings for their vital role in the industry.

Gedeb’s impact is also closer to home. Five percent of profits from Gedeb sales will go to Rainier Scholars, an incredible local non-profit that offers a pathway to college graduation for students in Seattle and Tacoma. It helps eliminate barriers to educational opportunities, supporting new generations of professionals and community leaders. Rainier Scholars’ 12-year journey has an inspiring success rate, with 91% of students graduating from four-year universities, far higher than the national average of 65%.
