Barrel Aged - Blackfish Distillery (Turihamwe)

Since the day we opened our doors, we've made it a tradition to release something truly special around the holiday season. Every year, we team up with incredible local breweries and distilleries to create a one-of-a-kind coffee experience. Over the years, we’ve collaborated with fantastic partners like Oola, Métier Brewing Company, and Black Fish Distillery. This year, we’re thrilled to announce that we’ve joined forces once again with our good friends at Black Fish Distillery for a spectacular release!

How Does Barrel Aging Work? 🤔
Here’s the magic: coffee beans are highly hygroscopic, meaning they love to absorb moisture—and with it, the aromatic compounds in their environment. When green coffee beans are stored in barrels that previously held spirits, they soak up the lingering flavors of the spirit. Depending on the barrel, this can result in subtle sweetness (like with rum barrels) or delightful bitter notes (as seen with whiskey or bourbon barrels). The result? A rich and complex cup that’s perfect for the holidays.

This Year’s Barrel-Aged Coffee: 🎁
For 2024/25, Black Fish Distillery generously shared two bourbon barrels with us, and we took it from there! We aged our Turihamwe, a beautifully washed Burundian coffee, in these barrels for four weeks before roasting it to perfection. The result? A cup that dances with notes of maraschino cherry, crisp green apple, and a medium body.

This coffee is a true multitasker—it shines on manual brews and delivers a fantastisc concentrated cold brew that pairs beautifully with festive, warming holiday drinks. It’s a cozy and unforgettable way to celebrate the season.

THE COFFEE

This year's barrel aged coffee was produced in collaboration with our good friends at Blackfish Distillery share two of their bourbon barrels with us this year. We aged our Turihamwe, a washed Burundian coffee in it for 4 weeks before roasting. The cup reminds me of Maraschino aftertaste, green apples with a medium body. This coffee is great on manual brews and makes a fantastic concentrated cold brew to be used in warming Holiday beverages.
